Description
The caja belongs to the membranophone group.
Description of the instrument
It is a drum with a cylindrical metal box, with a wide diameter and low height. It consists of two taut membranes of skin or other material, one in each mouth. In the back membrane it usually has a string made of gut or similar material, which modifies and amplifies the sound.
Way of playing
The interpreter plays with two drumsticks (palos), with great dexterity, producing rolls and rhythmic games that enrich and embellish the music.
History
In brass bands and charanga-fanfarre-type groups, this flat drum is usually common to set the rhythm and enrich the group's music with its performance.
This type of drum has also been widely used in popular groups of txistularis and dulzaineros in the Basque Country.
